GrappleMax 2
On the 30th August, the second edition of GrappleMax took over Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury, delivering another incredible evening of high-level grappling. The event, run by Richard Foster of Strom Sports Nutrition and Tristan Smith, head coach of Alento BJJ Shrewsbury, showcased some of the best talent from across the UK — and Black Country Jiu-Jitsu was right in the thick of it.
Five BCJJ athletes stepped onto the stage under the lights, each representing the hard-working ethos that defines our gym. The event atmosphere was electric from start to finish, with the venue packed and production levels higher than ever — the kind of show that gives grapplers the platform they deserve.
Chris Sherrington, James Bullingham and Sam Mitchell (from Plan A Performance) all came away with impressive wins, showing composure and solid control throughout. Chris scoring a quick after a dominant opening, James took a hard-fought decision victory, while Sam secured a submission finish, all demonstrating the technical and physical standard that’s become expected from our competitors.
One of the standout moments of the night came when Commonwealth gold medallist and Olympian Chris Sherrington was awarded his black belt by Dave Weston immediately after his match. The promotion came as a complete surprise, creating an unforgettable moment for everyone in the venue. Chris gave an emotional speech thanking Black Country Jiu-Jitsu for the support and preparation he’s received in preparation for his match — a moment that perfectly captured the community spirit and respect that runs through the sport.
Despite two tough losses elsewhere on the card, every athlete left it all on the mats. Each match was competitive and fast-paced — the type that helps sharpen experience and prepare our team for the next challenge.
Behind the scenes, Dave Weston — head coach of Black Country Jiu-Jitsu — worked as matchmaker for the event, helping assemble the stacked lineup that made GrappleMax 2 such a success. He also joined the commentary team, providing expert insight and a coach’s perspective throughout the night.
Events like this highlight how far the UK grappling scene has come. The level of production, professionalism, and talent continues to grow with every show, and GrappleMax is setting a new standard for regional events.
Massive credit goes to Richard Foster and Tristan Smith for their continued work in building something that benefits the entire UK Jiu-Jitsu community. GrappleMax 2 proved once again that when the right people come together with the right intentions, the sport thrives.
We’re proud of every BCJJ athlete who stepped up to represent the team. The experience gained from nights like this always pays off — in growth, composure, and confidence — and we’ll be back, stronger and sharper, for the next one.
